“Book Summary
Homo idioticus explores the paradox of human intelligence and simultaneous irrationality. It highlights the deeply ingrained biases, institutional inertia, and cognitive limitations that lead to suboptimal decision-making.
Drawing on examples ranging from military blunders to societal norms and environment, Homo idioticus critiques our susceptibility to misinformation and poor judgment. It delves into the roots of this idiocy, from biology and societal norms to systemic flaws, using vivid historical and modern examples to illustrate our follies. An Evening with Dan Goldman
Date: Wednesday, June 25
Time: 7pm EDT
Address: Books & Books, 265 Aragon Avenue Coral Gables, FL 33134
Ages: Not listed
Parking: Not listed
Description:
“About the Book:
From graphic novelist Dan Goldman, a tropical horror series about haunted Miami real estate, psychedelics, and santería. Meet Red Light Properties, brainchild of schlubby exorcist Jude and ambitious realtor Cecilia, who sell “previously-haunted” homes to South Floridians who can't otherwise afford to own in today’s market. A nice deal for buyers, not so much for Jude and Ceci. Because in order for Jude to perform his daily exorcisms, he requires heroic doses of psychedelics to cross into the spirit world and commune with the ghosts... leaving Cecilia holding the bag with like, everything else: finding clients, closing contracts, the emotional labor of holding their family together, and... you see where this is going. Family businesses are always the worst, but this one’s an actual supernatural nightmare. A rollercoaster of ghost stories, family mishegoss, paranormal scares and druggy Florida hijinks, Red Light Properties: Unfinished Business is a slowburn fun-house mirror critique of reptile-brain late-stage American capitalism served up in a massive hardcover slab of comics.
About the Author:
Dan Goldman is a writer, artist and graphic novelist. His comics work includes Chasing Echoes, the UN-honored Priya’s Shakti series, 08: A Graphic Novel of the Campaign Trail with journalist Michael Crowley, and the Eisner-nominated Shooting War. He has written on video game franchises including The Division, The Walking Dead and Emmy-winning work on Silent Hill: Ascension. He lives in South Florida.”

🍝Guayabera Day Designation Celebration🌮
Date: Friday, June 27
Time: 4 - 10pm EDT
Address: THE HAVANA COLLECTION, 1421 Southwest 8th Street Miami, FL 33135
Ages: Not listed
Parking: Not listed
Description:
“We are thrilled to announce the Guayabera Day Designation Celebration, set to take place on June 27, 2025, hosted by Calle Ocho News at The Havana Collection on Calle Ocho — a renowned Guayabera store that all of Miami must know about. This exciting event will mark the redesignation of July 1st as Guayabera Day, a tribute to the iconic Guayabera shirt — a symbol of Hispanic heritage, style, and craftsmanship.
We are proud to partner with Miami Dade County Commissioner Eileen Higgins, who is officially redesignating July 1, 2025, as Guayabera Day, honoring this cherished garment and its cultural significance. Commissioner Higgins recognizes Guayabera Day as an important tribute to the cultural heritage of the community. “Guayabera Day is more than a celebration of style—it’s a tribute to culture, craftsmanship, and the timeless elegance of tradition, connecting generations through heritage and pride,” said Commissioner Higgins. By celebrating this day, she hopes to preserve the significance of the Guayabera and highlight its role in Miami’s identity.
Honoring George Feldenkreis and Cubavera’s Legacy The Guayabera’s rise to popularity in North America is thanks in large part to the dedication of George Feldenkreis and his son, Oscar Feldenkreis, CEO of Perry Ellis International. George Feldenkreis founded Supreme International in 1967, initially importing Guayaberas and school uniforms to North America and Europe. This effort was pivotal in introducing the Guayabera to mainstream fashion markets and ensuring its cultural significance spread far beyond its origins. Tragically, George Feldenkreis passed away on February 20, 2025. In his honor, this year’s Guayabera Day Designation Celebration will pay special tribute to his incredible contributions in popularizing the Guayabera and preserving its rich heritage.
In 2000, the Feldenkreis family launched the Cubavera brand under the Perry Ellis International umbrella. Inspired by Latin culture, Cubavera transformed the traditional Guayabera into a modern lifestyle collection that includes suit separates, shirts, jackets, pants, and shorts. Cubavera’s vibrant designs reflect the rich essence of Cuba’s cultural heritage, blending timeless tradition with contemporary style. The brand’s influence has played a significant role in making the Guayabera an iconic fashion staple worldwide.
4:00 PM to 10:00 PM
• Free Cuban cuisine and beverages
• Live Entertainment featuring music that celebrates Hispanic culture.
