✨An Evening with Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes, Authors of "Shattered"✨
Date: Tuesday, August 5
Time: 7pm EDT
Address: Books & Books, 265 Aragon Ave. Coral Gables, FL 33134
Ages: Not listed
Parking: Not listed
Description:
About the Book:
“‘So many revelations.’ —Joe Scarborough, co-host of MSNBC’s Morning Joe
The authors of the #1 New York Times bestseller Shattered provide a revelatory, inside look at the Biden, Harris, and Trump camps during the 2024 battle for the White House, arguably the most consequential contest in American history.
The ride was so wild that it forced a sitting president to drop his re-election bid, a once and future president to survive felony convictions and a would-be assassin’s bullet, and a vice president, unexpectedly thrust into the arena, to mount an unprecedented 107-day campaign to lead the free world.
Fight is the backstage story of bloodsport politics in its rawest form—the clawing, backstabbing, and rabble-rousing that drove Donald Trump into the White House and Democrats into the wilderness. At every turn, the combatants went for the jugular, whether they were facing down rivals in the other party or their own.
Bestselling authors Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes give readers their first graphic view of the characters, their motivations, and their innermost thoughts as they battled to claim the ultimate prize and define a political era. Based on real-time interviews with more than 150 insiders—from the Trump, Harris, and Biden inner circles, as well as party leaders and operatives—Fight delivers the vivid and stunning tale of an election unlike any other.
In the end, Trump overcame voters’ concerns about his personal flaws by tapping into a deep vein of dissatisfaction with the direction of the country. At the same time, Democrats struggled to connect with an electorate that felt gaslit by Biden’s insistence that he had delivered economic prosperity—and his pledge to be a “bridge” president. He tore his party asunder, leaving destroyed personal relationships in his wake, as he clung to power. And when he gave it up, he kneecapped Harris by demanding unprecedented loyalty from her.
As Allen and Parnes have done in the #1 New York Times bestseller Shattered and Lucky, they provide readers with a skeleton key to the rooms where it all happened, revealing a story more shocking than previously reported.”

Ages: Not listed
Parking: Not listed
Description:
“Weaves the author’s own four-month cross-country sojourn in a VW van with thoughts on travel narratives across the history of American literature
In Driving Lessons, Christopher B. Strain sets out on a quintessential American road trip, exploring not just the roads and byways of the country but the road trip’s place in American culture. Strain dives into the well of American travel writing, illuminating fascinating aspects of the road trip, such as how race, class, and gender shape the experiences of road trippers.
In the summer of 1998, amid a professional crisis of confidence, Strain settled on a plan to reconnect with both himself and the country he studies. He purchased a 1972 Volkswagen Westfalia van and set off on his own cross-country odyssey. In the weeks that followed, he ruminated on his own ongoing journey alongside great journeys from the past and how they reveal the heart of the traveler as well as the landscape of the nation.
Visiting archives and landmarks across the United States, Strain's journey became a parallel to the stories he studied—an opportunity to see and experience the cities, national parks, and monuments that define US history. Driving Lessons is a compelling blend of literary analysis and memoir, offering readers an insightful and heartfelt reflection on the enduring power of the American road trip.
About the Author:
Christopher B. Strain is professor of American Studies at the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College of Florida Atlantic University. He is the author of four other books, most recently The Long Sixties: America, 1955–1973.”

Description:
“The Partners in Racial Justice discussion series invites those who visit the “To Be Sold: Enslaved Labor and Slave Trading in the Antebellum South” exhibit at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center to become inspired agents for change in understanding our shared connections to chattel slavery and in learning to bridge our racial divides. Using examples drawn from author Margaret Seidler’s descriptions of the sale of Black people in her book, Payne-Ful Business: Charleston’s Journey to Truth, and artist John W. Jones’ vivid paintings that connect viewers to the inner and outer lives of humans who were bought and sold in America.Partners in Racial Justice works to develop coherent models of social discourse, social action, and community building that accelerate the generation of grass roots engagement and contributes to the elimination of racial prejudice. By bringing groups of people from diverse backgrounds together for uplifting discussion, acts of service, fellowship, and reflection, this process seeks to gradually erase the barriers of race, social class, ethnicity, and religion that often divide people by instead connecting their hearts in true friendships and meaningful efforts to improve the conditions in their communities.
Session 1: WHAT DOES SLAVERY HAVE TO DO WITH ME?
July 12, 2025, 10:30AM-12:30PM
Although some perspectives and current policies diminish or deny the residual impact of slavery on modern thought, action, economics, and societal norms, an exploration its history in the United States, and the resistance movements it spawned, further underscores the indelible imprint it has had on our society, and how people of every race aspire to freedom and justice. Although an exhaustive survey of this history cannot be achieved during the sessions, participants will explore the systems and relationships that built the nation from 1619 to the present, including accounts of constructive resilience that enslaved people and their descendants used to overcome oppression in the fight for freedom and equality. This theme of freedom and justice will be discussed and revisited throughout the series.
Session 2: SIGNIFICANT COLLABORATIONS
August 9, 2025, 10:30AM-12:30PM
Explore how a White author who descended from slaveholders and a Black artist whose ancestors were enslaved became a team that is contributing to an understanding of the role we all play in creating a nation where unity in diversity is embraced. How does the example of Margaret Seidler and John W. Jones’ collaboration inspire our community to take steps to extend this work?”
